A father has been sentenced to prison after admitting that he became a drug mule in order to pay his daughter's exam fee.

Devon Brown was sentenced after being charged with possession, dealing, taking steps to export, and conspiracy to export ganja.

He pleaded guilty in The Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court to all four counts but offered the court an explanation.

Brown said, "Your Honour, I know I've done something wrong ... . I have my daughter doing exams, so I did what I did to try and pay off some bills."

The court was told that Brown passed out 19 parcels of the drug, weighing one and a quarter pounds.

He was fined $2,000 or six moths for possession; $4,000 or six months for dealing; $8,000 or six months, plus nine months, for taking steps to export the drug, and nine months for conspiracy.

The sentences are to run concurrently. A fingerprint order was also made against Brown.
