Bolt in good shape - Mills

Mills

Glenn Mills, coach of the world's fastest man, Usain Bolt, says his athlete is in good shape ahead of his 100m opener at the Jamaica Invitational IAAF World Challenge meet next weekend.

After missing two season openers earlier this season, speculation had been rife that Bolt, who had been expected to get into his running at the Camperdown Classics, was injured. However, a strong performance in anchoring Racers to victory at the UTech Classics two weeks ago, where he seemed to need minimal effort to pull away from countryman Asafa Powell, who anchored the MVP track club, went a long way in dismissing any such speculation.

"Usain is in good condition, doing well," Mills told United Kingdom online publication Independent Online (http://www.iol.co.za).

"He is ready to run next week. I expect him to do well. He's in good shape. I'm expecting him to run a good race."

The appearance will be the first, in an individual event, for the double world record holder this season. Bolt, who many believe fell short of his particularly high standards last season, despite claiming the 200m world title in Daegu, ended the year with the world's fastest time in the event, 9.76, clocked at the Diamond League meet in Brussels.

Knowing that expectations are high for the London Olympic Games, Mills has not ruled out an in-form Bolt lowering his world records of 9.58 (100m) and 19.19 (200m), but believes conditions at the summer showpiece would have to be favourable.

"I don't think it is impossible. But he would have to have the right conditions. I'm not sure if London (weather) is going to be kind," Mills said.

At the same time, the coach insists that the world record is not the target and should be looked at as simply a bonus.

"The world records are what you call a bonus," Mills said. "The objective is the title. If you break the world record in the process, great. But the goal is to get to the line and win the race, not to break the record."
