Lenya wilks' 'I hate Love' raises eyebrows

Reggae recording star Lenya Wilks has been raising eyebrows with her new single, I Hate Love.

"My manager Sam Berley wrote the song actually after he and I had some discussions about how love can affect people's lives in a terrible way. It is great and tragic at the same time, and that is why I just hate love. It is the reason people get married, then divorced, the reason people feel happy, then fall into despair ... love makes you make bad decisions, just check history, check your friends' lives," she said.

She said the song is semi-autobiographical because it reflects the state of her own thinking on the bitter and sweet of love.

"I personally can't find love, maybe I am just too demanding, I ask too much of people. I love to fall in love, I want to fall in love, I want to be in love, but once I am in the grips of it, you know how it can end. I have seen how painful love is when it ends, either you lying in bed crying for weeks, after the relationship is over ... or you're plotting revenge or you're depressed. That's why I hate love, reason dictates that you don't want to fall in love, but we will still do it all over again, we want to be loved. It's a human thing," she said.

Interestingly, Lenya will be performing at a Valentine's Day show at Couples Negril on February 14.

"I am looking forward to it, I don't know if they are going to request I Hate Love but it is going to be a great show," she said.

She recently scored a #1 hit with the saucy Baby Come to Me, a single that some critics dubbed to be the quintessential lover's rock 'matey song'.

"The song itself has stirred up a heated debate on Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites. People love it, the females love it, the men love it, when I perform it, the fans ask me to do it again; once a woman got up and shouted, "ah so me get my husband!" and everybody started laughing. The reaction of people on Facebook and youtube has been great too. One man messaged me on Facebook to say it is his "favourite song and he would come to me anyday'," she said.

The song, which was written and produced by her manager Sam Berley, was released on the ZX5 label. The single is also starting to pick up interest on FM radio overseas, as it was recently added to the playlists of a couple of stations in Florida, and New York stateside, and in France and Germany in Europe. The video has generated over 32,000 spins on YouTube so far.

Baby Come to Me was also included in several internationally released compilations such as the successful Balooba 'Still Deh Deh' compilation in Italy. She was one the featured artistes on the cover of that mix CD.

"I am getting calls from all over, but I definitely need more love from the radio though, lover's rock doesn't quite get the attention of dancehall, but I am grateful," she said.

A top five finisher in the 2007 edition of the competition, Lenya Wilks has carved out a reputation as a powerful and soulful singer. Since parting ways with Beres Hammond's Harmony House label, Wilks has concentrated her efforts on penning songs for her Lenya-loving legion of fans.
