Liquid cocaine found in tins of carrot juice at UK airport

United Kingdom border officials are reporting that a massive haul of liquid cocaine hidden in tins of carrot juice at the Gatwick Airport in London is believed to have originated from Jamaica, according to an article posted on dailymail.co.uk.

The UK Border Agency believes this £8 million haul is the biggest seizure of its kind in British history, the article is reporting.

On January 14, the staff made the discovery while carrying out checks on a cargo flight which had arrived from Jamaica. The shipment, which had been labelled as food stuff, was found with the cocaine hidden in tins marked as containing carrot juice. The drugs weighed around 80kg and would have a street value of £8 million.

The article further states that during investigations carried out by the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), the shipment was tracked to a number of addresses across London before arriving at premises in Beckenham, South London, two days later.

The police, in carrying out raids on a number of properties, reported that they found evidence of previous shipments as well as large quantities of cash.

William Hayles, 50, and Randall St Patrick Lewis, 52, were charged with conspiracy to import controlled drugs, and were remanded until April 26, when they will appear at Old Bailey Criminal Court in London.

Three people have also been bailed pending further inquiries, the article concludes.
