Psychiatric evaluation for accused car thief

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man accused of stealing a motor car last November, is to receive psychiatric evaluation before his next appearance in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on April 10.

Roxroy Haughton, charged with larceny of a motor vehicle and robbery with aggravation, had his $100,000 bail extended to facilitate his next doctor's appointment on March 20.

Allegations are that on November 1, 2012, Haughton drove off with the car in Rose Mount, St James, but crashed 150 yards away. He was held by residents and was subsequently arrested and charged.

Resident Magistrate Sandria Wong-Small was told that the car owner no longer intends to proceed with the case as the vehicle has been repaired.

"I am told that the complainant's car has been fixed, and the complainant does not intend to proceed with the matter," said clerk of the court Natalie Malcolm.

"Do you know if he (Haughton) has gone for a psychiatric evaluation?" RM Wong-Small asked Haughton's lawyer Trevor, Ho Lyn.

"I gather that he cannot get an appointment until the 20 of March. It would be best to keep him on the mention list until that is done," replied Ho Lyn.

"The matter is set for April 5, to get a statement from the complainant. Mr Haughton, you will return to court on April 5 at 10:00 in the morning; your bail is extended," RM Wong-Small told the defendant.
