Sabotage? - Kartel claims unfair treatment

Vybz Kartel - File

Incarcerated dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel has penned a five-page letter expressing what he claims is unfair treatment by authorities since his incarceration.

According to the artiste, perhaps enemies from his past are seeking to get back at him.

In a letter signed by the the deejay, he claims that since his incarceration he has been a victim of sabotage. He said that members of the police force are trying to use the media to damage his character.

He further claimed that a certain senior officer during an interview has sought to implicate him in issues he was not involved in.

"I would like to add that the police made a lot of damaging remarks against me," he said.

In the five-page letter the deejay not only wrote about his case now before the court but also sought to clarify allegations that contraband was found in his cell at the Gun Court Remand Centre in November 2011.

"Three cells are on the block where I was located. When the search was done, only a phone battery was found in the cell beside my cell. I was present as well as another remandee in my cell. Plus one remandee in the cell that the battery was found and two remandees in the third cell," he continued.

The artiste also said that another search of his cell block was done in January 2013, in which the police discovered cellphones in the cells of other inmates. However, he said, the police again found a way to incriminate him with the bust. Vybz Kartel says this was another attempt to stall his bail application process

"My bail was denied based mainly on this blatant lie by the Jamaican police. I would very much like the public and the world at large to read this letter impartially and unbiased," he wrote, adding he also wants the assistance of The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) and other human rights organisations.

"I am demanding that INDECOM, human rights organisations and the powers that be, investigate the events that took place on the mornings of November 4, 2011 and January 22, 2013," he said.

Vybz Kartel claims to have written two letters to INDECOM in recent times, one delivered by his common-law wife and the other by one of his lawyers, Miguel Lorne.

Lorne, who represents Kartel in several civil matters, yesterday, confirmed he was given a letter by the deejay to take to INDECOM and it was delivered last week.

"Since Kartel has been incarcerated, I have been assisting him by giving him books to read, so that when he comes out he can be a much more conscious person," the attorney said. "I have given him books such as Marcus Garvey's Philosophy and Opinions and the autobiography of Malcolm X, so that when he comes out he can eradicate songs with gun lyrics and songs about women that are not so pleasing."
