Thief gets two years for grabbing chain

A man who grabbed a gold chain from a man's neck and tried to escape was sentenced to two years imprisonment in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charged with robbery with aggravation and malicious destruction of property is Benjamin Emerson of a Spanish Town address.

The court was told of the complainant's heroism, which led to his pursuing the accused and recovering his jewellery while restraining the defendant until cops arrived.

According to the Crown, about 9 a.m. last Friday, the complainant was walking on Orange Street, downtown Kingston, in the company of a female companion, when he was approached by the defendant.

The defendant grabbed the complainant's chain from his neck and ran off, but the complainant gave chase and held him, recovered the item, and prevented his escape.
