Waiter to be sentenced for assault

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James waiter who stoned a man he claimed "set him up" to get in trouble with his girlfriend will be sentenced in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on April 5.

Jerome Newby from Upper King Street, Montego Bay, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm on Tuesday. It is alleged that he hit Rohan Turner in his back with a stone on February 27.

Newby told Resident Magistrate Sandria Wong-Small that the incident unfolded when Turner tried to set him up to be labelled as cheating on his girlfriend.

"Your Honour, I know it was wrong, but it was a set-up," said Newby.

"Why would you say it was a set-up?" asked RM Wong-Small.

"Two girls came to my house, and by the time I invited them to sit down, my girlfriend came and said 'I finally catch you with woman', and I saw this man with a machete," said Newby about Turner.

"Why would they do that? What would he (Turner) gain from that?" asked RM Wong-Small.

"It's not the first time him tell her (Newby's girlfriend) that woman coming to the house," Newby replied.

RM Wong-Small ordered a social enquiry report to assist in determining Newby's sentence. Newby was also advised to submit his fingerprints to the police.
