An Antiguan newspaper has reported that a Jamaican man who was caught on video stealing a BlackBerry smartphone, which was left charging inside a Burger King fast food restaurant, is to be deported shortly. Ricardo Pebbles, who appeared in the St John's Magistrate's Court, pleaded guilty to larceny of the phone valued at A$1,110 (approximately J$39,805). He was remanded until today, the date set for his departure. It was revealed in court that the victim left his BlackBerry Curve plugged into an outlet close to the entrance of the Deluxe cinema about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, March 1. An hour later, when the man was about to leave the restaurant, he went to collect his phone and discovered that it had gone missing. The charger, which was left behind, was found in the wall outlet. After the surveillance camera was reviewed, Pebbles was pointed out as the culprit and was seen placing the phone into his left pants pocket. He then exited the establishment. A report was subsequently made to the police and Pebbles was picked up at the B-Hive Restaurant and Bar in Heritage Quay. Pebbles reportedly told the court that, "I went to the movies and I came downstairs. I was talking to a female then I sit. Then someone told me, can you hand me that phone there? And that's what I did". The secretary of a local attorney handed over the phone to the police. |
