Tivoli vs Waterhouse - round one

Ryon Jones, Staff Reporter

The focus this weekend will be on the Red Stripe Premier League, but the fifth round meeting between Tivoli Gardens and Waterhouse, at the Edward Seaga Complex, will act as a precursor to the Flow Champions Cup final.

The two teams, which will meet tomorrow at 5 p.m., will one week later renew their rivalry in the knock-out final seeking to pocket the $1m prize money on offer.

"When we play them (Tivoli) on Sunday the intention is to beat them and also beat them in the Flow Cup," Waterhouse's coach, Junior Francis, said.

"This game will be very important, because the team that wins this game will get a moral boost going into the final."

The defending Flow Cup champions, Tivoli, are coming off an impressive 5-0 win over Arnett Gardens in the semi-final of the KO, while Waterhouse clipped Harbour View 1-0.

Tivoli are also unbeaten in the league, but have only managed one win to go with three draws to lie fifth, with six points, in the 12-team standings, and that is an area of concern for assistant coach, Alvin Shaw.

"We have shut out from the Flow Cup at the moment and our focus now is the premier league," Shaw said. "We are going to approach this game on Sunday with the mindset to move up the Premier League table, so the most important thing right now is to start getting full points from games."

Waterhouse currently occupy third, with seven points, as the league table is currently led by Humble Lion (nine).

"Any game we are playing now is very important, because we do not intend to give up any more points," Francis said.

"So this game will be very important just the same, because we don't want anybody to be too far ahead of us."

One of the players that everyone keeps their eyes on when Waterhouse takes the field is last season's leading marksman, Jermain 'Tuffy' Anderson. But despite Shaw anticipating a physical game, which Anderson is known for, there is no plan to pay him special attention.

"I expect a very physical game, they (Waterhouse) do play very physical, but we can deal with it," Shaw said. "We are not going to focus on any one player."

Anderson, who was thrust into the spotlight following his goal last month against Costa Rica for Jamaica in World Cup Qualifying action having being previously ignored for international duty, has had a very slow start to the season scoring only one league goal.

"He (Anderson) needs to start scoring goals; I think he is putting too much pressure on himself to score, Francis said.

"He just needs to relax and get back to his old ways of playing."

Another subplot to the game is Tivoli's left back, Jameel Thompson, who after seven seasons at the club moved to Waterhouse last season before returning to Tivoli at the start of this year's campaign.
