A constable attached to the St Thomas Police Division who was charged with illegal possession of firearm in 2012 was recently freed when he appeared in the St Thomas Circuit Court.

Thirty-two-year-old Constable Shanjay Harris was freed after his attorney, Hensley Williams, made a no-case submission on his behalf.

In making his case, the attorney argued that Harris had no knowledge, custody or control over the firearm that the police recovered from the vehicle he was driving.

The constable was charged with illegal possession of a firearm in March of 2012, after a series of robberies in the Yallahs area. Police were conducting a patrol when they came upon a vehicle at a gas station in Albion, alleged to have been used in a robbery. The occupants, including the constable who was at the time on suspension, fled the vehicle but were chased, apprehended and charged.

The prosecution, following testimony by a policeman involved in the case, could offer no further evidence and Harris was freed.
