Aids rumour leads to machete beating
Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter

A woman accused of wielding a machete, using the blunt side to beat another woman, was remanded when she appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

She is Michelle Roberts, charged with assault occasioning bodily harm.

The Crown alleged that on the day in question, Roberts used the machete to beat the female complainant, causing injuries, following a dispute.

Vehemently denying the allegations, Roberts quickly corrected the prosecution stating: "A piece a board, Your Honour!", rather than a machete as previously disclosed.

The court heard that the two have had long-standing disputes leading up to the machete incident.

"Dem a spread rumour say me a gi har bredda bun, and seh mi have AIDS," the complainant remarked.

"How long yu plan to spend in jail for this Miss Roberts?" asked Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.

While the mum accused fished for a response, the sitting magistrate ordered her remanded until today awaiting sentencing. A fingerprint order was also made.
