Narine stars for Kolkata

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (CMC):

A four-wicket haul from West Indies spin sensation Sunil Narine stunned champions Mumbai Indians to a disappointing start in the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) yesterday.

Narine grabbed four for 20 to curtail a run chase as Kolkata Knight Riders crushed Mumbai by 41 runs in Abu Dhabi.

Mumbai stumbled to 122 for seven after Kolkata scored 163 for five with half centuries from Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey, 72 and 64.

Kolkata got off to a poor start, losing a scoreless Gautam Gambhir to be 1-4 in the second over after winning the toss and opting to bat.

However, they quickly bounced back with Kallis and Pandey putting on a 131-run partnership before Lasith Malinga claimed the second wicket.

Malinga was a bright light for the otherwise lacklustre Mumbai, taking 4-23 off four overs.

Mumbai needed 63 off 28, but their big-hitting allrounders, Kieron Pollard and Corey Anderson, struggled against Narine, who became the quickest bowler to 50 wickets in the tournament.
