Look out for Insane Bolt

INSANE BOLT - File

Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

CHAMPION trainer Wayne DaCosta has wasted no time in placing three-year-old INSANE BOLT where he believes the gelding is most effective, slotting him in for Monday's Easter Sprint Cup overnight allowance at 1100 metres.

A half-brother to speedy four-year-old filly OLYMPIC PROSPECT, INSANE BOLT returns nine days after chasing TALENTED TONY K and ROCKETMAN to the last furlong and a half of the 2000 Guineas.

Following splits of 23.3, 45.4, and 1:11.1 into the lane, INSANE BOLT stayed third until BARS OF GOLD and RELAMPAGO relegated him to fifth, where he stayed until the end of the mile race.

Bred to sprint, DaCosta hoped INSANE BOLT would have used his class to have a chance against the top three-year-olds in this season's classics. However, TALENTED TONY K's superior speed and the run-on horses' stamina have ruled out any chance of INSANE BOLT capturing a jewel in the Triple Crown race.

A practical trainer, DaCosta smartly pounced on the first overnight allowance sprint he could find, pitting the classy three-year-old against older rivals.

INSANE BOLT had worked brilliantly for the 2000 Guineas, covering six furlongs in 1:14.1 a week before the event. Treat the gelding's run in the Guineas as a follow-up workout, making him a cinch in the Easter Cup at 54.0 kilos, taking on horses who have never won an overnight allowance.

INSANE BOLT should close out a three-timer for DaCosta, who has CFORTUNEONEHUNDRED in the opening event and SAINT BERNARD in the seventh.

The champion trainer's FORTUNEONEHUNDRED won comfortably on March 29, getting home in 1:27.3 at seven furlongs, and should repeat at 1300 metres in the opening event.

DaCosta seems to have finally figured out that the United States-bred four-year-old doesn't want to sprint, even though he is quick. Stretched out on last, FORTUNEONEHUNDRED bowled along in front and quickened when asked by Dick Cardenas, demolishing GAGA LADY and EXCLUSIVE PRINCE.

FORTUNEONEHUNDRED will again be the controlling speed as none of his six rivals is equipped to test him on the lead, giving Cardenas time to allow his mount a second wind entering the stretch run.

SAINT BERNARD ran an encouraging race at 1000 metres round on March 30, caught by PHINEAS, who won in 59.4. The gelding is normally void of pace but seems to have found wings as a four-year-old, blazing 1:00.3 from the gate on Monday.
