Simpson, Walker heading to Canada

CAYMANAS Park will next week lose a combined 35 years of champion-jockey experience to Assiniboia Downs, Winnipeg, Canada.

Five-time top jock, Trevor Simpson, and four-time champion Omar Walker have been confirmed for the Manitoba racetrack, where live racing is conducted May to September each year.

Assiniboia Downs hosts live racing on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, select Sundays, and public holidays.

Simpson started riding at Caymanas Park in 1986 and holds the record for most wins in a single season at Caymanas Park-171. The 44-year-old is no stranger to the North American circuit, where, he has won 181 races from 2,047 starts, having first ridden on the continent in 1993.

It will be a new experience, however, for 32-year-old Walker, who debuted at Caymanas Park seven and a half years ago and quickly won four consecutive titles, 2007-2010, while riding primarily for champion trainer Wayne DaCosta.

He has never won a race outside Jamaica and it will be interesting to see how he especially adapts to riding under lights at Assiniboia Downs, which lists its post time as 7:30 p.m. for regular Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday racing.

Walker's arrival, however, is already being discussed on Twitter after being invited by Assiniboia Downs CEO Darren Dunn to ply his trade at the track.

Simpson has done well for himself for the last two years in North America. He recorded 28 wins, 28 second-place finishes, and was third 35 times, from 249 starts in 2013. The previous season, he went 31-32-24 from the same number of rides.

As a young man, he was at his peak in 1999, going 43-70-42, from 381 mounts.
