Talented Tony's gift

Donald Williams - File

TALENTED TONY K brought one last moment of racing joy to Donald Williams last Saturday when he made every post a winning one to land the 2000 Guineas at Caymanas Park.

Williams, a renowned owner and breeder, passed two days later, at age 72, having bred another classic winner, following 2006 St Leger winner ALLIEDFORCE, who also won the Governor's Cup that year.

A man who believed in trainer Noel Ennevor and his horses, on the track and in the breeding shed, Williams sold TALENTED TONY K for $1.6 million at the 2012 yearling sale. The speedy colt is now in line for a shot at the Triple Crown.

A half-brother to 2011 Jamaica Oaks runner-up, RIGHT MARKER, which Williams bred and owned, TALENTED TONY K turned the tables on Philip Feanny's Prince Consort Stakes winner, ROCKET MAN, to romp the Guineas by seven lengths.

Williams also bred and owned PHILISTIA, who lost two big races in driving finishes - the 2011 Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes and the Jamaica Oaks.

Of all his racehorses, ALLIEDFORCE probably brought Williams most joy, though he finished fourth in the 2006 Derby behind RANSOM MAN after going to post as a hot favourite.

One of his most memorable races was the 2007 Governor General's Stakes, a bang-up finish, a head-bobbing third to winner RUM TALK and 2006 Horse of the Year MIRACLE MAN.

Williams died overseas after a brief illness. A security-industry stalwart, he operated Allied Protection Limited but had handed the business reins to son Leo, who says he knows nothing about horse racing.

Williams' racing legacy, however, will not end as his youngest daughter, Nickita, according to his widow, Gloria, was bequeathed her father's racing interests.

"She is very interested in racing. She is to inherit the horses," said Gloria, Williams' wife of 32 years.

"She returns to Jamaica this month. She is not in racing but has gone to the races and to look for the horses with him," she added.

Gloria said she is not a regular at the races but said she would "make a note" of June 14 when Lorne Kirlew-trained TALENTED TONY K lines up in the Jamaica Derby.
