New fire trucks valued at $133m

The Jamaica Fire Brigade, and by extension the Jamaican populace, is expected to benefit from the addition of three new trucks valued at approximately $44.4 million each, THE STAR has learnt.

The three units with a combined value of $133 million are reportedly the first of their kind to be used in the island. Each truck is equipped with breathing apparatus and features that enable them to pump water while in motion, discharge water at a rate of over 700 grams per minute, boasting air-conditioned cabins.

They are expected to be deployed at the St. Andrew, Portmore, St Catherine; and May Pen fire stations.

During the handover ceremony at the Portmore Fire Station in St Catherine on July 18, state minister in the ministry of local government, Colin Fagan, said the fire trucks are the first set of new units to be acquired since 2006, when 46 were purchased.

"The Ministry of Local Government and Community Development has now taken another step to protecting lives and property from the ravages of fire by acquiring these three fire trucks," he remarked.
