Jamaica opened the 2014 West Indies Under-15 Championship with a three-wicket victory over Barbados at Up Park Camp yesterday.

Led by captain Raewin Senior, Jamaica posted 220 for seven, off 47.2 overs, in response to Barbados' 219 for eight off their allotted 50 overs.

Senior made a top score 69, laden with two sixes and eight fours, and shared in a valuable third-wicket stand of 128 with vice-captain Dominik Samuels, who made 54.

Also among the runs were André McCarthy, with a quick-fire 34 off 35 balls, and Bryan Brown, 26 not out.

Pacer Nyeen Young, who jolted the Jamaican top order and left-arm spinner Nico Reifer, ended with two for 38 and two for 20, respectively.

"It was a very good performance by us after finding ourselves in a tricky position," said Senior, who saw his team plummet to 22 for three at the start of the run-chase. "But I was always confident that we would get to our target as we have batting from number one to number 11."

Earlier, Barbados had Joshua Corbin, 43, and Jadan Jones, 33, to thank for their total.

Left-arm spinner Senior took three for 38 and off-spinner Duke Reid, claimed two for 37.

"It was an ordinary batting display by us. We should have posted a total of over 250 runs," said Barbados' manager, Dwayne Best. "This match, however, is the first of five and we intend to bounce, back come the next round."

In other results, defending champions Trinidad and Tobago defeated the Windward Islands by six wickets at Kensington Park, and Guyana got the better of the Leeward Islands by 113 runs at Melbourne Oval.

Trinidad made 134 for six off 45.5 overs, in reply to the Windwards 130 for nine off their maximum 50 overs while Guyana, after posting 261, returned to bowl out the Leewards for 148.

The championship will continue tomorrow. The matches scheduled are: Barbados vs Guyana at Melbourne, Trinidad & Tobago vs Leeward Islands at Elletson Road and Windward Islands vs Jamaica at Kensington.
