The injury bug plaguing Jamaican star athletes this season has struck again as Hansle Parchment, the fastest man in the world this year in the 110-metre hurdles, will reportedly miss the Commonwealth Games.

The 24-year-old Parchment will be out for a few weeks because of an injury to his hamstring sustained when he competed at the Diamond League meeting in Glasgow on July 11. He will miss the Games that began today and conclude on August 3. However, he should be back competing before the season ends.

Parchment's manager, Juliet Campbell, yesterday confirmed the injury and that the athlete will miss the Games. "He is not out for the rest of the season but on doctor's orders he needed a few weeks to heal," she said.

This is the second time since last year that Parchment sustained an injury just prior to the start of a major championship. In June 2013, Parchment, who then had the world-leading time of 13.05 seconds, picked up an injury during the national championships and barely won a race against time to be ready for the IAAF World Athletic Championships in Moscow. He got injured again during competition and did not medal.

This year, the towering hurdler from eastern Jamaica became the first Jamaican to break the 13-second barrier when he ran 12.94s to win in Paris on July 5 only to be injured six days later. Campbell said he is taking this latest injury in stride.

"He is dealing with it," she said. "He has accepted it and is dealing with getting healthy and ready for the rest of the season."

The athlete did not make the trip to Glasgow for the Games.

So far this season injury has hit a number of Jamaica's best athletes including Yohan Blake, Olympic and World champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and the world's fastest man Usain Bolt.
