Room shortage problem solved

GLASGOW, Scotland:

Twenty-two of Jamaica's athletes at the Commonwealth Games and several team officials will be housed outside the Athletes Village at the nearby University of Glasgow, after the team encountered issues finding sufficient rooms and beds for the incoming athletes.

Glasgow 2014 organisers had not made arrangements for the athletes, who were only recently registered due to issues relating to Jamaica's entry list.

The Jamaicans and a number of other countries were allowed an extended entry deadline period due to the fact that their trial event for athletics was set to take place beyond the original date.

However, the process presented some several hiccups for organisers with the names of the 22 track and field athletes being left off the accreditation list.

The matter was eventually resolved after meetings between the Jamaica Olympic Association and the organisers but Jamaican officials still needed to ensure that additional rooms and beds were provided for the group.

"Because we had some late registration of some of our athletes, there was an issue with rooms," explained Chef de Mission on Major Desmon Brown. "Also, the Athletes Village is oversubscribed, it currently has over 800 more beds than what was originally planned for and to bring them in here would have created an unnecessary congestion."

"We spoke to the University of Glasgow - our attache studies there - and he has arranged for us to get some additional rooms," Brown added. "We need about 20 beds, some of these athletes get in on Wednesday and so this had to be sorted out."

"We are happy that we managed to resolve this issue because it could have been a major one,"added Brown.
