Weir plots way to gold

Warren Weir - File

GLASGOW, Scotland:

With two major championships and two medals -bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games, silver at last year's IAAF World Championships - It only makes sense that Jamaican 200m sprinter Warren Weir will continue his trend of upgrading the hardware at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Games, which got under way yesterday with athletics action to come on Sunday, is Weir's first.

In fact, Scotland may very well be the perfect place for the wiry 24-year-old to win his first senior international individual gold medal, considering that his surname is traced to Scottish heritage and that there is even a small village not too far from the host city by the name of 'Bridge of Weir.'

"Yes, my name is actually Scottish," Weir laughed.

Still, getting to the top of the podium is no joking matter, especially considering his less than convincing form lately.

Weir, the 2013 Diamond Race winner in the 200m, has not won in his last three races, losing at the National Senior Championships, the Edmonton Classic as well as at the Glasgow Diamond League on the very same track that he will be competing in a few days.

not been at his best

Still, the light-hearted Weir is hardly bothered by his recent results, noting that he has not been at his best physically, but that he is focused on getting it right in time to ensure the shiniest of the medals is dangling from his neck when that time comes.

Ups and downs

"I have had an up-and-down season, I am certainly not where I was last year, but I ran 19.82 a few weeks ago so even though I don't think I am where I would like to be, I am still pleased and I know I have a lot more in me," Weir said.

"I have absolutely no doubts at all. I'm not 100 per cent, as I had a little concern in my knee, nothing major (though). We have been very cautious but I have no doubts about my ability and readiness to compete," Weir added.

"I have the experience from competing at the Olympics and World Championships and I just have to make the most of that, put those experiences in hand and come out and handle myself in a business-like manner and get the job done."
