Flag bearer Weir humbled

GLASGOW, Scotland:

Jamaican 200m sprinter Warren Weir says he is honoured to have carried Jamaica's flag and lead the team out during last night's Opening Ceremony of the 20th Commonwealth Games at Celtic Park in Glasgow, Scotland.

Weir, the 2012 Olympic bronze and 2013 World Championships silver medal winner said he was surprised by the opportunity, but was humbled that he was asked to do the honour for a team stacked with talent throughout.

"To be given the role to lead out the nation and carry the flag for Jamaica, knowing that we have a very large contingent of excellent athletes from different sports and to know that I was selected from that group is a great honour," said Weir.

The-24 year-old admitted that he hadn't given it much thought coming into the Commonwealth Games, but noted that he was excited to have been given the opportunity.

"I am extremely honoured, proud and humbled by this. I am really happy to have been given this opportunity and it's one that means a lot," Weir added.

Another Jamaican sprinter, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who won three gold medals at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow, represented the Caribbean region in a new element to the programme.
