A woman formerly employed as a cashier at a Corporate Area bank who is alleged to have underhandedly transferred a sum of money from the account of a woman to that of popular reggae singer George Nooks, had her bail extended in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last Thursday.

Charged with larceny as a servant, forgery, uttering forged documents and falsification of account is Abbey-Gaye Thompson.

Allegations are that Thompson served as a sort of personal banker to Nooks who frequently conducted business at the Half-Way Tree, St Andrew, branch of the bank.

Nooks reportedly went to the bank to make a withdrawal of US$10,000, but was told by Thompson that the bank did not have that amount of US currency. He made a request to have the amount paid in Jamaican dollars and was given $1.2 million.

It was revealed that the funds paid to Nooks was taken from the account of another account holder of the same bank.

Noticing that there were several discrepancies with his account, Nooks made further inquiries into the matter. He was surprised to learn that a number of receipts bearing his signature for investments he thought he had legitimately made with the bank were fraudulent. Several transactions were allegedly made by the accused without his consent or knowledge.

"She deal with everything Your Honour, and everybody in the bank can vouch for that. And that was my stupidity," an ejected Nooks explained.

"It's not stupidity," Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said in a comforting tone.

Subsequently, the accused woman had her bail extended by the sitting magistrate and was ordered to return to court on August 8 for a mention hearing.
