Green light for Leford

GLASGOW, Scotland:

It's been an oddly quiet year so far for Jamaican 400m hurdler Leford Green.

The 2012 London Olympics finallist and four-time World Championships representative comes into the 2014 Commonwealth Games on the back of just four appearances this season in his pet event.

None of those has been particularly impressive; fourth place at the Jamaica International Invitational in May in 49.77, eighth place at the New York Grand Prix (50.87) and third place at the National Senior Championships in 49.00, after a 50.14 second place run in the heats.

The many-time national champion has fallen behind Roxroy Cato (48.48), the fourth-fastest man in the world this year and this season's number five Annsert Whyte (48.58), in the event this year, but no worries; Green is feeling good about his chances and believes it is the perfect opportunity to get on the medal podium.

"I'm looking forward to competing here, it's my first time getting to compete here so I'm really excited about it. A lot of people try to look down at this competition but I'm looking forward to it because its always competition, and it's actually always high here," Green said.

It's been seven years since he made his senior international debut for Jamaica as a participating member of Jamaica's 4x400m relay team at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan.

More than enough time for him to work his way on a podium.

"It's a chance that I'm really looking forward to taking because if I can't get one (medal) here at the Commonwealth Games my chances at the Olympics and World Championships will be even slimmer," Green said. The men's 400m hurdles gets under way at Hampden Park on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. (5:30 a.m. Jamaica time).
