The new Red Hills Primary School in St Andrew continues to benefit greatly from its new home as the institution sets its sights on paving the way for the provision of quality education.

Four months after its official opening, principal of the school, Lorna Hector, remarked that the new structure has boosted the morale of teachers and students alike.

"So far, we're satisfied. Very grateful for what is, and we have all pledged to treat the building well. I think the community is very proud," she declared, during THE weekend STAR's recent visit. "Whatever things that they (the Ministry of Education) wanted to finish up, they are being done. For example, the commissioning of the fire alarm, they have been doing it."

Following the receipt of the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) results recently, remaining optimistic, Hector shared that the school will continue to focus on academics as there is room for improvement.

"Academic wise, we're not where we want to be, but we're still trying under the circumstances," she explained. "My opinion is that it could have been better. We have seen better performance."

The headmistress shared that several students who recently sat the GSAT at the school were placed at secondary institutions which proved difficult for them to access. Mounting concerns from parents have prompted her to question placement schematics.

"This year, for whatever reason, quite a number of them were placed at St Mary's College and we're wondering if it's because of the geographic location. I have been speaking with persons, and to get there transportation wise, it is strenuous for the students. That's what I've been learning," she explained. "I have been pressed to ask the ministry to do otherwise. But I don't know if that is possible."

The school's staff looks forward to undertaking the business of edification for the start of yet another school year.
