A sergeant is one of two policemen charged with breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act on Tuesday.

Sergeant Ainsley Henry and Constable Clayon Miller, both from the St Ann division, were arrested and charged by members of the Anti-Corruption Branch following a ruling from Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn.

Police reported that, on Monday, June 9, personnel from the division were on patrol along the Discovery Bay main road when a vehicle and its occupants were searched. The search revealed J$350,000 which was found in the possession of one of the occupants.

It is alleged that, after the money was found, the policemen accused the men of being involved in criminal activities and corruptly solicited J$200,000 and warned that, if their demands were not met, they would be arrested. A report was subsequently made to the ACB, where an investigation was launched.

The officers were brought before the St Ann's Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday where Sergeant Henry was offered J$150,000 bail with surety and Constable Miller offered J$350,000 bail with surety. In addition, they were instructed to surrender all travel documents. Both men return to court on Friday, October 3.
