Bail denied for nwa workers on fraud charge
Chad Bryan, Star Writer

Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Georgiana Fraser refused bail for former special projects manager at the National Works Agency (NWA), George Knight, and electrical engineer Clava Mantock Jr in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court Tuesday.

Both men were arrested in a fraud operation spearheaded by the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Task Force (MOCA) last Friday.

The RM granted bail to the three other men who were also held in the operation.

Police Inspector Andrew Bobb was granted bail in the sum of $2 million with one or two sureties while Clava Mantock Snr and Melville Edwards were each granted $2 million in bail with one surety. As conditions of their bails, they were made to surrender their travel documents and reporting conditions implemented. They were ordered fingerprinted.

Prosecutors objected to bail for Knight and Mantock Jnr, alleging that 33 9mm rounds of ammunition were found at premises occupied by Mantock Jr. They are expected to be questioned by police in relation to the find.

In its case against the five, the Crown outlined on Tuesday, how a company, Cenitech, led by the former public servant George Knight, allegedly submitted a number of forged documents to authorities to be registered as an approved contractor.

Senior Resident Magistrate Georgiana Fraser was told that the company was later selected for a $700 million construction project in St Thomas.

According to the prosecutors, Cenitech provided the National Contracts Commission with the names of several persons and their particulars to support its application to be listed as an approved contractor.

One man said to be an employee of the company later came forward and denied being employed to the company or giving permission for his name or particulars to be used to support any application.

The matter was subsequently handed over to the police and an investigation launched.

The case is to return to court on Monday for mention.
