Wright, Morgan target history

Chad Wright

It's been 80 years since Jamaica last won a medal in the men's discus at the Commonwealth Games, but that could all change today with Jason Morgan and Chad Wright eagerly awaiting their chance, to add their names to the record book at Hampden Park.

Bernard Prendergast was the last and only Jamaican to stand on a medal podium at the Commonwealth Games, in the event way back at the 1934 London games when he won the bronze medal.

Both Morgan and Wright were solid enough in yesterday's qualifying round, with Morgan, the 2011 Central America and Caribbean champion, dropping the disc at the 63.82m mark, while Wright overcame early nerves to register a 61.08 measurement of his own, setting up a double Jamaican assault on the discus medals, with the first throw in the final set for 6 p.m. (12 p.m. Jamaica time).

For Wright, it's about making the most of his first senior international championship experience, while for Morgan, he will be looking to repay the faith showed in him by his supporters, who helped to return to the sport after disappointments of last year.

not sufficient

Morgan was refused a competition exemption at the obligatory National Senior Championship, ahead of last year's IAAF World Championships, and was left off the squad after the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) felt that his stated reasons were not sufficient.

"This year, I quit throwing and if it wasn't for certain people who called me, motivated me, prayed for me, I would be sitting at home watching this," said Morgan. "I'm really elated, I'm feeling very good and I want to do something special in the finals for my well-wishers and supporters who have always believed in me."

"To be honest, I want this mainly for Jamaica, my family and friends, as well as my supporters. They are my motivation. It's been hard, but a lot of genuine people give me strength to keep on throwing," Morgan added.

"I want a gold medal, and this is my chance. I'm going to give my best, and I'm focused on getting the gold medal, only gold," said Morgan.

Wright, the two-time national champion and 2012 NCAA Division One champion, is happy to be representing Jamaica at this level and is looking forward to today's big opportunity.
