Commonwealth champs head Jamaica seven

Commonwealth Games champions Stephenie Ann McPherson and O'Dayne Richards head seven Jamaicans who will compete in the DN Galan Stockholm Diamond League meet in Sweden tomorrow.

The Diamond League returns after a month's break to facilitate the holding of the Commonwealth Games and last week's European Athletics Championships.

McPherson, who won the women's 400 metres gold in Glasgow 2014, is down to face Diamond League event leader Novlene Williams-Mills (14 points) and crack Americans Francena McCorory and Sanya Richards-Ross. McCorory is the world leader with a season best 49.48 ahead of Richards-Ross's 49.66.

Williams-Mills has a season-best 50.05, while McPherson has a 2014 best of 50.40.

Strongman Richards, who threw a national and Games record 21.61 metres to pocket the shot put gold medal in Glasgow, will face a high-powered field that includes American Joe Kovavs, who leads the world with 22.03m; German David Storl (21.97m); and American Reese Hoffa, 21.67m.

Hoffa, 11 points, is the Diamond League leader ahead of Kovacs, eight.

National champion and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Nickel Ashmeade and Nesta Carter are down for the men's 100 metres, where they will compete against event leader Mike Rodgers of the United States. Ashmeade and Carter have season best times of 9.97 seconds and 9.98, respectively, while Rodgers has best of 9.91. The American has nine points while Ashmeade is on four and Carter, three.

Glasgow sprint relay gold medallist Schillonie Calvert, will run in the women's 200 metres. Calvert who has a season best 22.88 seconds, will go up against Americans Torrie Bowie (22.18), Joanna Atkins (22.27), and Allyson Felix (22.34). Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare is the event leader with 11 points, ahead of Felix (nine) and Bowie (four).

Roxroy Cato, who clocked a personal best of 48.48 at the National Championships, will line up in the 400 metre hurdles, where the leading contenders are Michael Tinsley of the United States and Trinidad and Tobago's reigning World Champion, Jehue Gordon.

Tinsley's 48.25 seconds is the second-fastest time in the world this year. He is tied with Puerto Rico's Javier Culson at the top of the event. Both have 13 points.
