A nurse employed to the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) was recently charged after she was accused of stealing the 24-karat gold chain of an elderly patient who was admitted to the hospital for a broken hip.

Information reaching our news desk is that the accused, Yvonne Grant-Brown, 38, is schedule to face the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on September 2, after she was charged by the Papine police with simply larceny.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 3.

Reports are that the 84-year-old victim, who is a Chinese national, went to the hospital to treat a broken hip. She was referred to the X-ray department where the nurse/patient care assistant and a porter escorted her to conduct an X-ray.

Our news team was told that the patient was asked to remove the jewellery, which she handed to the accused. When the X-ray was completed, the chain, valuing millions of dollars, went missing.

An investigation was subsequently launched and Grant-Brown was arrested and charged.

A source close to the investigation said Grant-Brown allegedly told the police that after the X-ray, the chain was placed around the patient's neck.

The source said: "The elderly woman was collective and cooperative during her interviews (with the police) and her statements were recorded. She told the police what to her knowledge transpired."

The gold chain has still not been recovered.
