Husbands lands five to revive title chances

Patrick Husbands

TORONTO, Canada, CMC:

Brilliant Barbadian reinsman Patrick Husbands delivered big on Sunday when he captured five races on the ten-race card at Woodbine to remain firmly in the hunt for his seventh riding title.

The veteran jockey was forced to wait until race four to reach the winners' enclosure with favourite Rejoiceful, but once he did, he won four of the next six races, including the last four of the day, to make all the headlines at the prestigious Canadian racetrack.

Husbands rode winners in race seven with 6-1 bet Autobahn Legend; in race eight with 6-1 chance Madame G; in race nine with odds-on bet Constantino before rounding off the day with a handsome victory aboard 4-1 bet Derek's Prince.

Husbands now has 93 wins for the season, just seven behind leader and three-time defending champion Luis Contreras. Eurico Rosa da Silva, the 2010 Woodbine champion, lies third in the standings with 84 wins.

The 41-year-old Husbands last won the jockeys' title at Woodbine in 2009 and sent a stern warning to his main rivals with his strong display on Sunday.

He opened his account over a mile and sixteenth in race four when he stalked the pace set by Meg before sweeping the four-year-old bay filly Rejoiceful to the front at the top of the stretch to reach the wire 1-1/4 lengths clear.

Husbands was next in the winners' circle courtesy of a seven-furlong trip in race seven when he guided Autobahn Legend to victory by 3-1/2 lengths over the three-year-old and upwards.

He raced the four-year-old bay gelding off the pace from along the rails and chased the leaders in the stretch before gaining command in the final furlong.

Husbands followed up with another command ride, making all the running over a mile and quarter with four-year-old bay filly Madame G to beat the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares by 1-3/4 lengths.

He had a huge slice of luck in race nine over seven furlongs when he and Constantino were out-sprinted by Sniper, with Contreras aboard. However, Sniper was disqualified and placed fourth following a stewards' enquiry, handing the second-place Husbands victory.

Husbands then crowned a super day, getting the three-year-old bay colt Derek's Prince up late to overhaul favourite Another Bid, I Am Who I Am, and Cito, to win by 1-1/4 lengths in a mile and sixteenth trip.
