Electronic cigarettes banned

Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter

The future of the importation of electronic cigarettes is now blurry as the Ministry of Health yesterday placed a ban on the devices with immediate effect, THE STAR has learnt.

Following a directive from the Health Ministry, the Jamaica Customs Agency will refuse the clearance of electronic cigarettes, liquid cartridges or e-liquids effective immediately until further notice.

An electronic cigarette, or simply e-cigarette, is a battery-powered vaporiser that simulates tobacco smoking by producing a mist that resembles smoke. A heating element known as an atomiser vaporises a liquid solution called e-liquid. E-liquids are typically a concoction of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, nicotine, and flavourings.

E-cigarettes have not been fully investigated and the nicotine content is not yet known, and smokers are not aware of the health risks or benefits associated with the use of the device, the Health Ministry said.

The use of e-cigarettes has become increasingly popular among young adults in light of the recent ban on the smoking of cigarettes in public spaces throughout the island.
