Ikon D Link tells Zip FM sorry

CURTIS CAMPBELL, STAR Writer

Dancehall artiste Ikon D Link who sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry recently, after he threatened to take his life on the Zip FM compound if his song Stress was not played, is now seeking to make amends with the station.

According to the deejay, he wants to apologise because he did not intend to insult the company, but rather to make them aware that young artistes are strong supporters of the station, however, they are often times excluded from their playlists.

The deejay says he tried all the right avenues to get his song played before attempting to take his life. However, he failed to get airplay with each attempt.

" I have printed over 500,000 CDs and handed them out to radio stations, I have submitted CDs to Zip FM's library and I have never heard any of my songs played. I spent days outside of Zip FM's office in the sun and I would hand each disc jock a CD as they pass me by. I have no food, no shelter just ambition and I still didn't get no airplay. So that day I climbed the tower I was just frustrated because I have put a lot of effort into getting radio play. My CDs did not have any fancy printing because I don't have enough money to do so, it was worth to at least give me a chance," the deejay said.

The deejay also wants to apologise to ZJ Liquid, who was playing at the time of his suicide threat.

"Big respect to Zip I have big respect for that station, it's my favourite and ZJ Liquid is my favourite disc jock. My target audience listens to Zip and the youth like myself. I was not disrespecting anybody and I'm not trying to bring down the company, so please give me a chance. I am apologising to you. I am sorry and please play Ikon. ZJ Liquid much respect I was not trying to bring down your brand because you are a youth that plays good music. I just wanted my song to play, it wasn't even a publicity stunt, I wasn't thinking about that at the time. Mi did just want mi song fi play and if it never play I maybe would just jump. Mi music clean and the young people dem waah hear it and big up every Zip FM DJ," Ikon said.

The artiste is also encouraging Jamaican radio stations to dedicate some airtime to young talents. According to Ikon, the Jamaican music industry is breaking less than two new artistes per year and that is unacceptable when compared to other countries.

ZJ Liquid and fans who listened Stress as a result of the suicide attempt, had criticised the song based on its poor production. However Ikon says he is now promoting new songs Night Life and Bus Pass with better production and is again asking the local radio stations to show him support on air.

Zip FM currently has a policy to prevent persons from invading the company's property in an attempt to get their music played. According to the company all songs must be emailed to music@zipfm.net.
