Gully resident gets prison time for assaulting police

An occupant of the Shoemaker Gully in New Kingston, St. Andrew, who was accused of assaulting two police officers, was sentenced to three months in prison when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is 25-year-old Edgerton Harris of a Spanish Town, St Catherine address.

It is alleged that on August 22 an operation was conducted in the Shoemaker Gully and the accused became irate, a confrontation developed between himself and the police and Harris reportedly attacked the officers.

Assaulted were head of the New Kingston Division, Superintendent Christopher Murdock and a female officer. According to Superintendent Murdock, "while attempting to remove persons from the gully, he chucked me and I fell. He also assaulted a female officer and she fell and injured her hand."

Harris attempted to apologise for his actions, but was sentenced to three months in prison by Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey.
