Players bought into MOU

Hinds

West Indies Players Association (WIPA) president, Wavell Hinds, said a big part of realising the recently signed Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) was a 'buy in' from senior members of the West Indies team.

The CBA and MOU, which were signed on Thursday, paves the way for several issues pertaining to West Indies cricket to be thrashed out going forward, including a new payment structure for the players.

The new structure will see a dramatic increase in the number of players, who will be contracted by the WICB, and subsequently a change in the payment arrangement for West Indies players.

"I think it is spread out nicely, as this document covers everyone in full," said Hinds.

"We have decided as a body to take a chunk of that (payment) amount from the international pool, and spread it across the regional group into the player pool on a meritocracy basis.

"There is a pay-as-you-play or a minimum salary, and then there are retainer contracts up to the 'A' level that the WICB affords the international cricketers."

"As the players association, once that was understood from the membership, and of course, we highlighted the fact that it is replicated and practised around the world, the players bought into it, and the WICB had a similar vision, so it was easy to come to an agreement," he added.

Under the agreement first-class players stand to benefit from player retainer contracts of US$30,000, 20,000 and US$15,000 a year, respectively, in addition to other benefits, depending on their level of achievements. Senior West Indies players, in the meantime, are scheduled to earn more.
