Walters to fight Donaire in October

LEROY BROWN, STAR WRITER

Jamaican boxing star Nicholas 'The Axeman' Walters, the World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion, will get the opportunity to prove that he is the best featherweight boxer in the world, when he climbs into the ring at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, on October 18, to take on the WBA featherweight Super Champion, Nonito 'The Filipino Flash' Donaire.

Donaire became the Super Champion, a designation regarded as a cut above the 'ordinary' champion, when he defeated South African Simphiwe Vetyeka last May 31, by a fifth round technical decision, when they went to the scorecards after Donaire was unable to continue after receiving a severe cut above his eye.

Walters became featherweight champion on December 8, 2012, when he defeated Daulis Prescott to win the vacant title. He has had two successful defences, the latest being against Vic Darchinyan on May 31, by knockout in round five.

Donaire is the most talented fighter that Walters will face. He is from General Santos City in the Phillipines, and had been a top-10 fighter for several years. He is also a four division champion, having also won at super-bantamweight, junior featherweight twice and then at featherweight. He was the World Boxing Council (WBC) Fighter of the Year in 2012, after putting together a great performance to defeat WBC Diamond Belt super-bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, to end his eight- year 16-bout winning streak. He himself at one stage of his career had a 12-year, 30-fight winning streak.

He will without doubt be also the most dangerous fighter that Walters will face, as shown by his record, but the Jamaican believes that he is ready for the challenge.

"This is my dream fight, and I am going to give it my best shot," Walters said after the signing.

"Nicholas is very happy that this fight will take place after months of negotiations. Donaire is the man we wanted all along, and we are going to prove to the world that Nicholas is the best featherweight in the world on October 18. He has a lot of hard work ahead of him, but starting next week, we will be stepping up his training schedule, and we have one goal, and that is to beat Donaire decisively."
