Arnett, Tivoli ready for West Kingston derby

MARC STAMP, STAR Writer

Whenever Arnett Gardens and Tivoli Gardens meet in a senior football game, it is always loaded with excitement. This should be the same when the teams clash in the Red Stripe Premier League competition third round tomorrow, at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex in Trench Town, St Andrew. Kick-off time is 6 p.m.

The game is one of five scheduled on the day. The other games are Rivoli United vs Sporting Central at Bramwell Clarke Community Centre in Ewarton, St Catherine, starting at 4 p.m, Barbican vs Cavalier at UWI Bowl, Mona, at 3:30 p.m., Harbour View vs Reno at Harbour View Stadium at 6:30 p.m., Montego Bay United vs Boys' Town at WesPow Park in Montego Bay, St James, starting at 3:30 p.m.

And, the round will be completed on Monday night when Humble Lion host Waterhouse at Effortville Community Centre in May Pen, Clarendon.

Looking at another chapter in the Arnett/Tivoli rivalry, spectators should expect another thrilling clash. Arnett started the season in a positive way and are among the early leaders on four points from two games. On the other hand, Tivoli are on two from two drawn encounters.

Arnett management are fully aware that their venue is on probation, following crowd disturbance after a semi-final match against Waterhouse last season. They must ensure that the heat does not boil over again.

It will be their first game in Trench Town as the home game against Rivoli was played at Stadium East last Monday.

"This rivalry continue from way back in the day. It is a long time one and always a thriller," coach of Arnett Gardens, Jerome Waite told STAR Sports yesterday.

"We are searching to find the right chemistry. But this time around we have several players that will be out due to the Chikengunya disease," he said. "However, we are looking forward to this game on Sunday," he added.

With regard to Arnett's good start compared to past seasons, Waite said, "This is more than a good start for Arnett and we expect to continue in the same manner."

Meanwhile, Alvin Shaw, who was promoted to head coach following the resignation of Glendon 'Admiral' Bailey last season said he is anticipating another good clash between the teams.

"A game like this doesn't need a lot of motivation for the players. We have to make sure we get a positive result," Shaw said.

Tivoli had problems in pre-season and was unsure of participation due to financial reasons. However, they decided to go ahead.

"We are still behind. There was no pre-season and we knew that it would take awhile to get going. However, so far the players have done well," the coach said.

Tivoli have acquired Weston 'Barney' Forrest from Waterhouse and Mark Williams of Rae Town to bolster the squad.

"We have kept 95 percent of last year's squad and I think that we have benefited from that," he pointed out.
