Denham Town stay perfect

MARC STAMP, STAR Writer

Denham Town maintained an unbeaten run when they edged Innswood High 1-0 in a top of the table Group C clash in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/LIME Manning Cup schoolboy football competition at the Edward Seaga Complex yesterday.

The winners moved to 13 points from five games, at the half-way point in the group, while Innswood remained on nine from five games.

Substitute Shevon Richards entered the field in the 67th minute and scored the all-important goal two minutes (69th) later. Before that, Denham Town dominated for the most part, but wasted many chances.

Innswood fought hard and got a few chances. However, in the end Denham Town deserved to win. They moved clear in the race for group honours and a place in the inaugural LIME Super Cup that is scheduled to begin next month.

Coach of Denham Town, Earl Bennett was elated that his team won the game and maintained the lead in the group.

"I am definitely satisfied with the result as we played against a team that was in second place in the group," Bennett, who took over as coach from Desmond Francis told STAR Sports.

"We should have won by at least four goals. I think the team can make it to the second round and take it from there," he said.

Richards, who scored the winning goal, his first in the season was naturally pleased. It is my first Manning Cup goal and I am happy that we won the game," he said.

"I promised my principal (Audrey Williams) that I would have scored today (yesterday) and I did," the 17 year-old said.

"I think that the team can go all the way to the final as we have several defenders out," he said.

Meanwhile, Christopher Russell blamed the loss on the unavailability of some players. "Some of our players were not available due to sickness. We can get back and make it to the next stage," Russell said.
