Surgery puts off drug smuggler's sentencing

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU: A Canadian woman, who had attempted to smuggle over 40 pounds of cocaine out of Jamaica in 2013, had her sentencing set for October 14 when she appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Jenisa Willabus, of an Ontario address in Canada, had previously pleaded guilty to possession of, dealing in, and attempting to export 40 and three-quarter pounds of cocaine.

Reports are that on January 28, 2013, Willabus was preparing to board a flight to Canada at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay when her suitcase was searched and 17 food-drink packs and a number of cake-mix packages were found.

When opened, the packages were found to contain a white substance resembling cocaine, and Willabus was subsequently arrested and charged.

Yesterday, Willabus's attorney, Martyn Thomas, asked presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie to put off the defendant's sentencing for a later date as Willabus was scheduled to undergo a medical procedure.

"We are constrained to ask for an adjournment. Ms Willabus has a consultation with the doctor, and she is scheduled to have surgery on September 29," Thomas explained.

"Ma'am, you will be brought back here on October 14," Tie told Willabus.
