Belmont double for Rajiv Maragh

ELMONT, New York, CMC: Jamaican Rajiv Maragh continued to challenge for the early lead in the jockeys' championship when he rode a double on the ten-race card at Belmont Park on Sunday.

Maragh scored with 5-1 bet In Speight Ofitall in race five over over six furlongs, before returning to win the penultimate race of the day aboard favourite Rumble Doll, going seven furlongs.

The 29-year-old has 13 wins in the Fall meet, which started September 5 and wraps up October 26.

He opened his account when he carried the six-year-old chestnut horse In Speight Ofitall to a solid win over the three-year-olds and upward.

Maragh and In Speight Ofitall lacked racing room early on as Billypaysthebills and then Jimmy Soul made the running through the half-mile in 46.56.

However, Maragh found space approaching the quarter-pole and made the most of it, angling In Speight Ofitall to the outside, grabbing the lead with less than a furlong to run, and getting to the wire strongly.

In race nine, Maragh produced another late bid, this time aboard Rumble Doll, to edge the three-year-old and upward fillies and mares by a neck.

He raced the three-year-old bay filly well off the pace in the opening stages as 3-1 chance Given Bet posted 22.72 seconds for the quarter-mile and 46.93 for the half-mile.

The pair made gradual progress, however, and were four-wide entering the stretch. Maragh then urged the filly on and she steadily gained on the leader, before getting up to win at the wire.
