Innswood grab gutsy win
Shayne Fairman, Star Writer

Innswood High snatched three valuable points from host's Tivoli Gardens, courtesy of a come-from-behind 2-1 victory, in match eight of their Group C ISSA/LIME Manning Cup fixture, played at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex in Tivoli Gardens yesterday.

Centre forward Jamar Hope didn't have an outstanding game, but supplied the perfect cross, which Orlando Wade applied the finishing header to on six minutes. The match lacked intensity and creativity early on, but the first half ended 1-0 in favour of the home team (Tivoli). Innswood looked the sprightlier team after the break and tested the hosts' defence with some timely runs, but were let down by poor finishing in front of goal. Looking the more confident team, Innswood pressed on, and in the 50th minute earned a penalty, when a defender handled the ball in the area. Shawn Beckford stepped up, and easily slotted the ball past goalkeeper Marchel Christopher. Getting the equalising goal gave the visitors' even more urgency and more holes opened up in Tivoli's defence.

The team's goalkeeper Marchel Christopher struggled to cope with a number of aerial balls flighted into the box. He was found wanting, when Jerome Francis struck a thirty-yard free kick, which swerved and dipped over his head, handing Innswood the winning goal in the 84th minute.

Coach of Innswood Christopher Russell commended his team's effort.

"It was all about the fight from my boys. We introduced two fresh legs after the break and it made the difference for us," he said.

"We are a resilient team, we are aiming to go all the way and qualify for the next round and keep playing well," he concluded.

The Group C result means Denham Town top the group with 18 points from eight games, followed by Innswood on 15 from their eight. St Mary's College remain with a slim chance of qualifying, on 12 points, they currently lie third. Tivoli, Ardenne and Edith Dalton are out of contention.
