Teen claims he stole to start business

A teenager accused of stealing a gold chain was further remanded in custody when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charged with simple larceny is 18-year-old Damion Scott who pleaded "guilty with explanation" to the offence. The court heard that, on October 13, Scott, upon being searched by police personnel, was found with the stolen item in his possession.

Prompting the accused to provide an explanation, Resident Magistrate (RM) Simone Wolfe-Reece made inquiries into the matter. "Miss, dem find mi, dem search me a Juici Beef a town, dem search and dem find di chain," Scott began.

"We know dem search you and find it. Why you steal the chain?" RM Wolfe-Reece probed. "Mi want fi start up mi business," Scott replied. "Yu want to start up business? Which business that? RM Wolfe-Reece asked. Subsequently, the sitting magistrate ordered Scott further remanded until October 24, pending sentencing. A fingerprint order was also made.
