Cocaine smuggler to return to court

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A Canadian woman, who had attempted to smuggle more than 40 pounds (18.18 kilograms) of cocaine out of Jamaica in 2013, had her sentencing deferred to October 24 when she appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Jenisa Willabus, of an Ontario address in Canada, had previously pleaded guilty to possession of, dealing in, and attempting to export 40 3/4 pounds of cocaine.

Reports are that, on January 28, 2013, Willabus was preparing to board a flight to Canada at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay when her suitcase was searched and 17 food-drink packs and a number of cake-mix packages were found.

When opened, the packages were found to contain a white substance resembling cocaine, and Willabus was subsequently arrested and charged.

Yesterday, Willabus's attorney Martyn Thomas asked Resident Magistrate Carolyn Tie to put off the defendant's sentencing, as Willabus had recently undergone surgery.

"We were wondering if we could deal with this matter on the 24th of October, I know she (Willabus) has had a medical procedure done," said attorney Thomas.

Willabus was subsequently remanded in police custody and her case deferred to October 24.
