Radio station owner arrested for illegal JPS connection

A St James radio station is among the latest entity to be found with an illegal Jamaica Public Service (JPS) connection.

A release from JPS said the community radio station owner/operator was arrested when a meter bypass was found powering the small media entity. The radio station had been disconnected since last February for an outstanding balance, but was discovered to be receiving supply, via an illegal connection.

The JPS is also reporting that since January, 711 persons have been arrested for the illegal abstraction of electricity, as at October 15.

The company has been carrying out multiple operations across the island, with the support of the security forces, in addition to conducting meter audits and account investigations.

The parishes with the highest number of arrests for electricity theft are St James with 128, followed by St Elizabeth with 118 and St Catherine with 112.

A cold storage operation in Cross Roads, St Andrew was recently discovered to be stealing electricity worth half a million dollars per month. The facility served as a storage plant for bag juice supplies.

JPS is appealing to persons who are not regularised to visit the customer service office in their parish, or call the JPS Customer Care Centre at 1-888-CALLJPS or 1-888-225-5577, for more information.<
