'Mad' thief sent to prison
A man who pretended to be of unsound mind was sentenced to 18 months in prison when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court recently.

Pleading guilty to simple larceny and malicious destruction of property is 50-year-old Richard Coke of no fixed address.

According to police reports, on September 12, Coke stole a water pump valued $25,000. The pump was the property of Domino's Pizza on Hope Road, St Andrew. It is alleged that, while attempting to remove the pump, he damaged a pipe on the property. While attempting to leave the property with the stolen item, he was spotted by a passer-by and the police were summoned. He was subsequently arrested.

Mad act

While being sentenced, Coke abruptly shouted, "Bellevue!" which caused laughter to erupt throughout the courtroom. Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey stated, however, "The Bellevue thing ain't working today."

He was then asked again for his plea, to which he responded "Guilty! Me waa go a wah different court, Ma'am," he demanded.

RM Pusey asked Coke, "When was the last time you went to prison?" He responded, "Way back when, scallion, too!" and another round of laughter erupted in the courtroom.

"If you are mad, them will fix it inside there," RM Pusey told the accused after issuing his sentence.
