Accused knifeman in love triangle gets bail

Christopher Thomas, STAR Writer

WESTERN BUREAU:

A St James man accused of cutting his babymother's boyfriend on the abdomen during a fight, was offered bail in the sum of $150,000 when he appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Thirty-two-year-old Kino Johnson, of an Over River address, is charged with unlawful wounding. He not pleaded when he appeared in court.

Allegations are that the complainant - who also has a child with Johnson's babymother - arrived at the woman's home. While he was there, Johnson showed up and a dispute developed between the men.

Bail application

"They had a brief conversation ... then Johnson used a sharp instrument to inflict a wound to the complainant's abdomen. The female has children for both the accused and the complainant," said Clerk of the Court Reginald England in outlining the allegations to presiding magistrate Carolyn Tie.

In making a bail application, Johnson's attorney Martyn Thomas said his client had injured the complainant in self-defence.

Self-defence

"He (Johnson) instructs me that he acted in self-defence that day. They had an argument, the complainant drew a knife and stabbed at him, then he drew his knife and they had a fight," said attorney Thomas.

"I am going to offer him bail in the sum of $150,000 with three sureties, on condition that he is to have no contact with the complainant, and he is to report at the Adelphi Police Station every Wednesday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.," said RM Tie.

"If you take up your bail, you are to return to court on November 12," the magistrate told Johnson.
