|||||
Jamaicans, along with other illegal immigrants currently in the twin island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago will reportedly be receiving a three month amnesty to regularise their status. According to the Trinidad Express, the amnesty is expected to begin sometime next month and end in February of next year. However, when the amnesty ends, the illegal immigrants will be immediately detained and deported if they are unable to produce relevant immigration documents. Not a liability According to the Trinidad Express, the country's national security minister stated, "the illegal immigrants will be given an application to justify that they are of value to the country and not a liability to the public or a national security threat ... employers will also be given an opportunity to vouch for illegal immigrants working for them." According to a release issued by Trinidad's Ministry of National Security, more than 110,000 illegal immigrants are living in Trinidad and Tobago, with Jamaicans accounting for more than 19,000. |
