Woman fined for stealing electricity
Launtia Cuff, Star Writer

A St Elizabeth woman who was charged earlier this year for trespassing on the works of the Jamaica Public Service company was fined $90,000 or three months' imprisonment when she appeared in the Black River Resident Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

Avril Johnson pleaded guilty to the charge of electricity theft after she was held by members of the St Elizabeth police, who, along with technicians from the utility company, conducted an anti-electricity theft operation in the Logwood area of Black River.

During the operations, the court heard, technicians observed wire attached to JPSo public lines from a shop owned and operated by Johnson.

Observation revealed that there was no meter attached to the shop and she was subsequently arrested and charged.

Johnson was given until November 26 to pay the fine.
