Excelsior, Vauxhall impress

Excelsior High and Vauxhall made impressive starts with victories over Denham Town and Norman Manley High, respectively, in the ISSA/LIME Manning Cup football competition at the Constant Spring Complex, yesterday.

In the first game, Vauxhall edged former champions Norman Manley 3-2 in a come from behind win. Junior Lywood netted twice in the 72nd and 76th minutes, while Jordan Batson converted a penalty in the 82nd minute. Shaquille 'Driver' Lewis scored a brace for the losers in the 4th and 73rd minutes.

Meanwhile, in the feature of the double-header, another former champion Excelsior won courtesy of a double from Christopher Thorpe (45th and 85th) and Samuel Halliman (60th). On the other hand, Junior McGregor netted in the 59th minute.

Vauxhall shot into the lead in Group I on three points, followed closely by Charlie Smith and Innswood who come next on a point each, while Norman Manley sit at the bottom without a point.

Coach of Vauxhall Keon Beckford was elated that his team won the game and moved in front.

"It feels good to come back twice. The team showed resilience, so full credit to the boys," Beckford told STAR Sports. "We knew that we were better that them," he added.

"It was a tough one, but these are the games that pull teams together. We are now in the lead and looking forward to the next two games," Beckford said.

Lywood, who scored two goals in his team's victory was also elated with the win.

"Well, we listened to the coaching staff and carried out the instructions. We are in a good position and intend to top the group and advance to the semi-finals," Lywood said.

Meanwhile, Norman Manley's coach Paul Edwards said his team was indiscipline.

"I think it was an indisciplined performance that led to our downfall today (yesterday)," Edwards said.

Excelsior's victory put them on top in Group J ahead of defending champions Excelsior on goal difference. Both teams are on three points, followed by Holy Trinity and Denham Town - both without a point.

Coach of Excelsior Leebert Halliman lauded his team. "They gave it their best shot. I have to commend them," Halliman said.

"However, it is going to be tough for us in the next two games," he added.
