Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson says two Cuban experts are to arrive in the island tomorrow to assist with training Jamaican health and front-line workers in Ebola management.

This comes after the minister led a mission to Cuba in October and requested assistance in this area.

The announcement was made during the welcome ceremony for 30 Cuban health workers who arrived in the island Monday and have also already been trained in Ebola management as part of the agreement with Cuba.

"We are very grateful for this especially since we have put in place two Ebola treatment centres - one at the National Chest Hospital in Kingston and the other at the Cornwall Regional Hospital in St James - and we are now confident that we will have properly trained staff both locally and from Cuba to work in these facilities if the need arises," Dr Ferguson said.

This group consists of two dentists, two pathologists, four primary care doctors, one cytohistopathologist, one oncology nurse, three neonatology nurses, two paediatric nurses, three primary care nurses, three ICU nurses, two operating theatre nurses and one medical/surgical nurse.

"This group also includes one orthodontist, one periodontist, three prosthodontists and one mental health nurse. These are categories of workers that we have never had from Cuba before and that will add tremendous value to the health sector. This will also boost our capacity in several critical areas that we are strategically working towards building and improving," Dr Ferguson said.

This group of workers will be in Jamaica for two years and have been deployed across all four regional health authorities.
